Yankee Doodle Darlin’

When I was a kid 4th of July was the most embarrasing day of the year. My mom got all crazy patriotic excited over Independence Day…

Decked out in her red, white, and blue,  Mom would parade around the house marching to John Phillip Sousa music holding an empty paper towel roll as her “baton”  ala Robert Preston in The Music Man. We’d laugh and roll our eyes at her – she didn’t care.

Zoom ahead many years – she LOVED taking my little boys to the neighborhood July 4th Parade… I saw it as a way to sleep in a little on a day off;  thank you mom!

Then we began to take her to the parade… it has always been a fun day for us.

Yesterday, July 4th, I went to her place – drove in, parked; heading to the entrance I looked up to a “yoo-hoo” and there was Mom in her July 4th splendor waving joyfully from her flag draped balcony – no paper towel role, tho, haha!

I walked in to a photo session happening in the lobby.

Six of the vets who live there had just returned from the neighborhood parade. They rode in little red corvettes and waved at the crowd. One of them is 99 and fought in WWII, a real character.

Mom said she had watched them leave, roaring off in the corvettes and had gotten very emotional watching them go. It was sweet and lovely.

I was there to help sync her phone/be tech support. When I opened up her iTunes I had to laugh out loud at her music:  John Phillip Sousa!!

Her “Go USA” spirit has always been awesome… I’m proud to be the Yankee Doodle Darlin’s Daughter.

Struck Out Looking

I hate that. A player strikes out, not swinging at the ball, but looking at it… to see if it is a good pitch.

Of course, it happens to me, too. And there are probably perfectly acceptable reasons that I strike out while making sure it is all good.
Waiting, until the timing is perfect and the variables are all in the right “zone” is not really a good idea… but it sure is hard to take a swing for the fence when I’m not sure what’s coming!

Babe Ruth struck out 1360 times in his career… I hope I’ve got a few more chances.

I’ve been living in an all “boy” household for 18 years and I’m still amazed, charmed, appalled, and stupefied by the way they relate to each other… They are aliens! ;-D

Brenda Leigh is my favorite kitty

Brenda Leigh is a good teacher for me.  We saved her from certain death at Town Lake Animal Shelter and she re-pays us generously, she assumed the role of Alpha in our household and doles out small amounts of affection, on her own terms, of course.
I can learn from that type of gratitude, our kindness did not change who she was, she accepted it and moved on to a better life.  It would be unnatural for her cat-self to do any different.
In the past I have found myself at the receiving end of very generous offers – even accepted a few.  Later I became resentful of the power that the gift giver had over me… BUT  I should have been like Brenda Leigh and just moved on with my life.  If the giver meant well, that ‘powerless’ feeling was in my head. If the giver did not mean well or had an ulterior motive, screw ’em.

Mermaid Dreams

Mermaid Dreams

When I was a mermaid I dreamt mostly of experiencing dry life with legs and feet to carry me.
Walking in high heels, or lacing up tight sneakers.  Feeling grass between my toes or resting and peering at the ocean just past my feet.  I wanted to ride a moped.
I’ve checked off most of my Mermaid Bucket List… but I have not lived in a Gypsy Wagon yet.
